I Swear - Staithes Cinema Club - at Hinderwell Hub
I SWEAR (cert 15)
7:00pm Saturday April 25th
Hinderwell Hub, High Street, Hinderwell
'Funny, fierce and full of heart' **** Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
'An astonishing feelgood film about life with Tourette’s' The Times
'Hilarious and heart-warming film' **** Tim Robey, The Telegraph
'Robert Aramayo is exceptional ' Nikki Baughan, Screen Daily
We're on the road in April, bringing the very well reviewed 'I Swear' to Hinderwell Hub.
The film is about real-life activist John Davidson, who is from Galashiels in the Scottish Borders and has Tourette syndrome, with its tics, compulsive behaviour patterns and random obscene shouts. He was awarded an MBE in 2019 for his work educating the nation about the condition since he first exhibited its symptoms as a teenager in 1989, as captured in the BBC’s sensational documentary John’s Not Mad. I Swear contains a great performance from Robert Aramayo, full of intelligence and charm, and it raises relevant questions about the overdiagnosis debate surrounding conditions such as ADHD and autism, as well as the larger tonal point of how, when and whether to laugh at John or with him.

CHRISTY - Staithes Cinema Club
CHRISTY (cert 15)
7:00pm Saturday March 28th
St Peter's Centre, Church St, Staithes
Christy is a 'warm, involving, moving and funny', Irish movie about two brothers from Cork’s northside. It features 'outstanding performances of sympathy and strength'. There’s always a heartbeat of humour: it's a smart, likeable picture.
Set in Cork, Shane has to deal with his younger half-brother Christy, a seething, glowering 17-year-old who has just lost his place with a foster family on the other side of town owing to an ugly scrap, which is going viral on social media. But it turns out Christy has a talent not just for fighting, but for hairdressing. This gives the brothers a way out - but gets them into tricky situations too. A unexpected hit, with plenty of 4* reviews.

Staithes Cinema Club - The Taste of Things
THE TASTE OF THINGS (cert 12A)
7:00pm Saturday February 28th
St Peter's Centre, Church St, Staithes
'Deliciously Subversive' **** Wendy Ide, The Guardian
'So vividly and lovingly made, you’ll swear you can smell and taste every shot' **** Robbie Collin, The Telegraph
The film is set in France in 1885, the setting beautifully realised by Vietnamese-French director Tran Anh Hung. Binoche plays cook Eugenie with 'real wit and delicacy', with Magimel as famed gourmet Dodin Bouffant. The film has stunning sequences in the kitchen where the pair create increasingly elaborate dishes, but it's really about the deepening and enduring relationship between Eugenie and Dodin, sensually captured in a film that 'defies expectations'. Over the years, they have fallen in love, with Dodin proposing numerous times. As the dishes become more complex and sophisticated, the relationship develops.

“One of the great British films of all time” - Richard Curtis, film maker
'Funny, melancholy yarn' **** The Guardian
'Gentle musical comedy about fame and fandom' **** The Independent
We're starting the year with a funny, bittersweet film that was one of the best of the last year - the best according to 'Love Actually' director Richard Curtis.
The excellent Tim Key is Charles, a reclusive lottery winner who has his own island. His favourite band of all time is folk duo McGwyer Mortimer (played by Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan). Sadly they split when the couple broke up. But Charles has a plan to get the band back together, and invites them to his island for a grand reunion gig. But he doesn't reveal the size of the audience (one). And he fails to tell McGwyer that he's also invited his ex.

"WILDLY ROMANTIC"
From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino comes a monumental and deeply romantic story of a lifetime.
Born in the Bay of Naples in 1950, Parthenope (newcomer Celeste Dalla Porta) searches for happiness over the long summers of her youth, falling in love with her home city and its many memorable characters. But when tragedy strikes, and carefree romances lose their thrill, she decides to seek a deeper sense of purpose. Featuring a captivating performance from Dalla Porta and an outstanding cast that includes Gary Oldman, PARTHENOPE is another tale of great beauty from a master of modern cinema, unfolding over several decades.
