THIs MONTH'S FILM is
THE BALLAD OF WALLIS ISLAND (cert 12)
7:00pm Saturday January 31st
St Peter's Centre, Church St, Staithes
“One of the great British films of all time” - Richard Curtis, film maker
'Funny, melancholy yarn' **** The Guardian
'Gentle musical comedy about fame and fandom' **** The Independent
We're starting the year with a funny, bittersweet film that was one of the best of the last year - the best according to 'Love Actually' director Richard Curtis.
The excellent Tim Key is Charles, a reclusive lottery winner who has his own island. His favourite band of all time is folk duo McGwyer Mortimer (played by Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan). Sadly they split when the couple broke up. But Charles has a plan to get the band back together, and invites them to his island for a grand reunion gig. But he doesn't reveal the size of the audience (one). And he fails to tell McGwyer that he's also invited his ex.
This film is not only funny, but unexpectedly moving. It could have been a sketch, but as Catherine Bray wrote in the Guardian 'this turns out to be a different beast: a funny but also melancholy piece of work.

Re:Connect Event - walks, poetry, crafts
Tuesday 17th February at St Peter's Centre from 10.00am
Starting in September 2024 and running for five years, this project’s goal is to ‘REConnect’ people to the beauty of the Esk and its surrounding landscape, creating a deeper bond with nature. Through this project, we also want to help people understand the impact of climate change on the area and inspire them to take action to make a difference.
By encouraging local action, we aim to create lasting environmental improvements and build a stronger, more connected community.
We’re hosting a variety of fun activities and events for residents, visitors, businesses, schools, and more. We offer exciting opportunities to learn about the unique wildlife and habitats around the Esk, create better spaces for nature, and take meaningful action to build climate resilience.
